A great all-around pocket diaper with a medium-slim fit that fits babies from 7 to 35 pounds, the bumGenius 5.0 is absorbent, easy to spray clean, super simple for caregivers to use with minimal instruction, and comes in nice colors. Many parents who use this diaper report never having experienced a single blowout! On the downside, you'll have to unstuff these diapers for the wash and restuff them as part of your folding process, so if you're the type who tends to let laundry pile up on that random chair in the corner, pocket diapers in general probably aren't for you and you might want to try Freetimes, Elementals, or GroVia All in Ones.
Things We Love
- Slimmer Fitting Pocket Diaper: Pocket diapers tend to be bulkier than all-in-one diapers, but the bumGenius 5.0 is relatively slim-fitting as far as pocket diapers go. It is significantly slimmer fitting than KangaCare Rumparooz or Blueberry pocket diapers, for example.
- One Size Diaper: This diaper fits babies 7-35+lbs, though it starts to fit babies well without looking overly bulky around 12+ pounds.
- Fits Older Babies Best: We like this diaper best once it’s in its largest size, and it seems to fit older infants and toddlers especially well. When it’s snapped down to a smaller rise, it fits smaller babies well too, but we’ve found that the snaps used to make the diaper smaller can tend to come unpopped as you fasten the diaper onto your baby, which can be annoying but not a dealbreaker.
- Easy to Clean: For pee, simply remove the liners and toss in your diaper pail. For poop, remove the liners and spray solids into the toilet using your diaper sprayer and splash shield. Because the inner lining is one single piece of fabric, it is particularly easy to spray off solids without having to venture into a bunch of nooks and crannies. These diapers also have a little flap covering the liner pocket, which prevents poop from getting on the liners themselves.
- Adjustable Absorbency: BumGenius 5.0 diapers come with two super absorbent microfiber pads, one smaller and one bigger. You use the smaller pad for small infants, the larger pad for larger infants, and both pads together for heavy wetters and toddlers. Using both pads together, this diaper can handle a lot of liquid input and is great for overnight wear. Since the soaker pads are stored inside the pocket, baby’s skin stays relatively dry even as the pads absorb moisture.
- Leak and Blowout Free: Thanks to the adjustable fit and high quality elastic, bumGenius 5.0s contains leaks and prevents blowouts. Many parents who use these diapers report never experiencing a single blowout! Leaks do happen once the absorbent pads are soaked through, but this is preventable by either adding more absorbency up front or simply changing your baby's diaper more often.
- Super Easy for Caregivers: This diaper goes on in one piece and is super easy for caregivers, since it functions similarly to disposable diapers.
- Nice Colors: We’re a huge fan of classic White. Since there are no blowouts with cloth diapers, you don’t have to worry about the outer portion of the diaper staining and white looks good under everything. Many of the other color options are also on trend and lovely.
- Simple Laundry Process: Remove the inner liners. Rinse off solids. Place in diaper pail. Rinse cold. Wash hot. Hang dry for longevity or machine dry low for sanity. Stuff liners back into diaper pockets. Put away.
Things We Don't Love As Much
- Difficult to Stuff: Compared to KangaCare Rumparooz, bumGenius 5.0 diapers are more difficult to stuff, especially if you are doubling up your liners. The interior of the pocket is lined with waterproof fabric that is somewhat sticky, and unlike Rumparooz, the bumGenius liners do not snap together. These factors make it difficult to lay the liners flat inside the pocket diaper, but with enough practice, you'll get the hang of it.
bumGenius 5.0 Alternatives
- If you prefer a cloth diaper you don't have to stuff… avoid pocket diapers and try all in one diapers like the GroVia One Size All in One, bumGenius Freetime, or the bumGenius Elemental.
- If you prefer organic… GroVia O.N.E. and GroVia Hybrid diapers have organic cotton soaker pads, or you can buy organic cotton soaker pads separately and use them in your bumGenius diaper.
- If you want a slimmer-fitting diaper… GroVia One Size All in One is the slimmest, with the bumGenius Elemental as a close second.
